Love that post-facial glow? Here’s how to make it last!
You’ve just had the most incredible facial at Lena Wild studio with Yelena or one of her experienced team members. Your skin is glowing, your face feels lifted and sculpted, and you’re convinced this is the moment everything changes. But then, a week or two later, you notice your skin starting to revert. The glow fades. The breakouts return. The dryness creeps back in.
Sounds familiar?
Here’s what I’ve learned: the most transformative skincare results happen when you support your skin from both the outside and the inside. Think of it like tending a garden. Facial treatments are like pruning, watering, and nurturing the plants you can see above ground. But if the soil underneath isn’t healthy and nutrient-rich, those plants will struggle no matter how much care you give them at the surface.
Your skin works the same way.
The missing piece in your skincare routine
You’re already doing the right things. You’re using quality skincare products at home. You’re investing in professional treatments. You’re showing up for your skin. But if you’re dealing with persistent concerns like breakouts, sensitivity, premature ageing, dullness, or stubborn dryness, there’s likely something happening beneath the surface that topical treatments alone can’t fully address.
Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it’s constantly regenerating. Every few weeks, you have a completely new outer layer of skin. That means the skin you are treating today was literally built from what you ate, drank, and how you lived over the past few weeks.
When there’s inflammation in your gut, imbalances in your blood sugar, nutrient deficiencies, or hormonal disruption happening internally, your skin cells are being formed in a stressed, depleted environment. No amount of external care can fully compensate for that.
This is why Yelena and I work together. Her treatments address what’s happening on your skin’s surface while I help you address what’s happening underneath.
Common skin concerns and their hidden drivers
Let’s talk about some of the skin issues that bring people to Yelena’s treatment room, and what might be driving them from within.
Persistent breakouts and congestion
You might think acne is just about clogged pores or surface bacteria, but there’s often a gut connection. When your gut bacteria are out of balance or your gut lining is compromised, it can trigger body-wide inflammation that shows up as breakouts, particularly around your chin, cheeks and jawline.
Your gut bacteria also produce compounds that directly influence the bacterial community living on your skin. When your internal environment is struggling, it affects your skin’s ability to keep problem-causing bacteria in check. Professional treatments can address congestion at the surface level, but supporting your gut health helps prevent breakouts from forming in the first place.
Sensitivity, redness, and reactivity
If your skin feels constantly irritated, reactive, or inflamed, chronic internal inflammation is often at play. This can stem from gut issues, blood sugar imbalances, stress, or inflammatory foods in your diet.
Chronic body-wide inflammation can compromise your skin’s protective barrier. This makes your skin more vulnerable to irritants and less able to hold onto moisture. Professional facials and a suitable skincare routine can help calm and strengthen your skin barrier externally, while addressing internal inflammation gives your skin the stable foundation it needs to heal and stay calm.
Premature ageing, wrinkles, and loss of firmness
Here’s something most people don’t know. Overconsumption of sugar and refined carbohydrates can damage your skin’s collagen through a process called glycation. When glucose binds to collagen proteins, it creates harmful compounds called advanced glycation end products (AGEs) that make your collagen stiff and damaged, leading to wrinkles and sagging.
Your skin also faces constant oxidative stress from free radicals created by normal body processes, excessive UV exposure, and pollution. This breaks down collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep your skin firm and bouncy.
Professional facial treatments can stimulate collagen production and improve facial contours. However, protecting your existing collagen through nutrition and antioxidants ensures those results last longer, allowing your skin to age more gracefully overall.
Dryness and dehydration
If your skin feels perpetually dry, no matter how much you moisturise, you might be missing essential fatty acids in your diet. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are crucial for maintaining your skin cell membranes and your skin’s ability to hold onto moisture.
Additionally, your skin barrier is made up of specialised fats called ceramides that prevent water loss. When you’re deficient in specific nutrients, your skin can’t produce these protective fats effectively. While topical treatments can deliver hydration to your skin, without the right internal building blocks, your skin struggles to maintain that hydration on its own.
Dullness and uneven texture
Dull skin often reflects poor circulation, sluggish cell turnover, or nutrient deficiencies. Your skin cells need specific vitamins and minerals to reproduce and mature properly. Without adequate vitamin A, vitamin C, B vitamins, and zinc, your skin renewal process slows down, leading to a buildup of dead cells and a lacklustre complexion.
Professional facials can stimulate circulation, release muscle tension in your body and face, and encourage cell renewal through techniques like lymphatic drainage and exfoliation. However, providing your body with the nutrients it needs to generate healthy new skin cells ensures you maintain that fresh, radiant look between treatments.
The gut-skin connection: why your gut health matters
Your gut and your skin are in constant communication. Both are barrier organs, both are heavily populated with beneficial bacteria, and both are deeply connected to your immune system.
When your gut health is compromised through bacterial imbalance, a permeable gut lining, or chronic inflammation, it affects your skin in multiple ways:
- Systemic inflammation that compromises your skin barrier and triggers conditions like acne, eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis
- Altered bacterial balance on your skin, making you more prone to breakouts and infections
- Reduced production of beneficial compounds that typically help calm inflammation and support your skin’s defences
- Poor nutrient absorption, meaning even if you’re eating well, your skin isn’t getting what it needs
Supporting your gut health doesn’t just improve your digestion. It creates the internal environment your skin needs to thrive.
Essential nutrients for your skin
Just like at LENA WILD skin therapists use targeted products and techniques for your skin type and concerns, your skin needs specific nutrients to function optimally:
Vitamin C found in broccoli, kiwis, strawberries, bell peppers and citrus fruit builds collagen, giving your skin firmness and helping it heal. Without it, collagen production slows significantly.
Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation throughout your body and skin, while supporting cell membrane health so nutrients can get in and toxins can get out. Think: oily fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, walnuts, chia and flax seeds.
Vitamin A supports skin cell production and renewal, helping maintain your skin’s structure and reducing excess oil production. Vitamin A is found in liver, eggs, and dairy products, and your body can also make it from the beta-carotene in orange vegetables such as butternut squash, sweet potatoes, and carrots.
Vitamin E, found in seeds and nuts as well as avocado and spinach, protects your skin from oxidative damage caused by UV rays and pollution, and has anti-inflammatory properties.
Zinc is essential for skin cell growth and renewal, wound healing, and controlling inflammation. It’s particularly important for anyone dealing with breakouts. Zinc-rich foods include oysters and other shellfish, meat and poultry, legumes, pumpkin seeds, and whole grains.
B vitamins support skin cell turnover and help reduce inflammatory responses in your skin. To get your B vitamins from the diet, ensure regular consumption of leafy greens, shellfish, salmon, meat, poultry, and organ meats, seeds, nutritional yeast.
Polyphenols and antioxidants from colourful fruits, vegetables, and green tea protect against oxidative stress and can actually slow down the aging process at a cellular level.
When your skin is well-nourished from within, it responds better to treatments, heals faster, and maintains results longer.
Creating synergy between internal and external care
Here’s what I see time and again: the most transformative results happen when you support your skin from both the inside and the outside. Neither approach alone can achieve what they can accomplish together.
When you receive treatments that stimulate collagen production and improve circulation, your body needs the vitamin C and amino acids to actually build that collagen. If chronic inflammation is breaking down collagen as fast as it’s being made, lasting results become difficult to achieve.
When surface congestion is addressed through professional treatments, it provides immediate relief. But if gut dysfunction is driving ongoing inflammation and hormonal imbalance, new breakouts will keep forming, no matter how often you clear them.
When therapies are used to calm inflammation and support healing, they work beautifully. But if you’re eating foods that trigger inflammation or you’re deficient in anti-inflammatory nutrients, your skin is constantly fighting against itself.
This isn’t about one approach being better than the other. It’s about recognising that your skin is a living organ that needs support from multiple angles to truly flourish. External care addresses what’s visible now. Internal support creates the foundation for lasting change.
A realistic, sustainable approach
I know what you might be thinking: “Great, now I need to overhaul my entire diet and add a million supplements.” But that’s not what this is about.
My approach, much like Yelena’s approach to skincare, is rooted in sustainability and what actually works for your life. We’re not talking about restrictive diets or complicated protocols. We’re talking about understanding what your unique body needs and making gradual, enjoyable changes that support your health goals.
Some people need gut healing. Others need blood sugar balance. Some need to address nutrient deficiencies or reduce inflammatory foods. Everyone’s starting point is different, which is why we work together to create a personalised plan that fits your lifestyle.
The beautiful part? When you nourish your skin from within, you’re not just improving your complexion. You’re also supporting your energy, your digestion, your immune system, and your overall well-being. It’s never just about vanity. It’s about feeling good in your skin and your body.
